Stay Frosty Defensive Tactics is dedicated to promoting firearms safety, education, and responsible ownership across institutions serving K–12 school‑aged youth and adults. Our mission is grounded in prevention, accountability, and education.
Led by a licensed social worker and community activist, our team is committed to reducing firearm‑related criminal activity and decreasing preventable injuries and fatalities resulting from negligence—particularly among youth. Through structured, age‑appropriate instruction, we emphasize safety, awareness, and responsible decision‑making while introducing young participants to the shooting sports in a controlled and supervised environment.
Our approach recognizes that education is a critical component of prevention. By combining safety training, community engagement, and mentorship, we empower individuals and families with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed, responsible choices.

DO YOU KNOW THE YOUR STATES' GUN LAWS?
Firearms safety training is foundational to responsible ownership and community safety. Training helps individuals understand safe handling, storage, and legal responsibilities, which is critical for preventing unintentional injuries and deaths. Studies show that education reduces negligent discharges and improves safe decision‑making under stress. [rand.org], [nationwideccw.com]
For youth, safety education removes curiosity and mystery, reinforces boundaries, and teaches what to do if they encounter an unsecured firearm—whether at home or elsewhere.
For adults, training reinforces lifelong habits, legal awareness, and proper maintenance and storage, all of which are cornerstones of responsible ownership.
What Is Article 35 of the New York Penal Law?
Article 35 – Defense of Justification governs when and how physical force (including deadly physical force) may be lawfully used in New York.
Key points:
-
Justification is a legal defense, not a blanket permission to use force. [ypdcrime.com]
-
Force must be reasonable under the circumstances and based on an imminent threat. [nycourts.gov]
-
The defense applies differently depending on whether force is used to defend a person, premises, or to prevent certain crimes (e.g., burglary or arson). [nysenate.gov]
Because Article 35 is fact‑specific, outcomes depend on circumstances and are determined by courts. [law.justia.com]
Does New York Have Castle Doctrine or Stand‑Your‑Ground?
-
Stand‑Your‑Ground: No. New York does not have stand‑your‑ground laws. Outside the home, there is generally a duty to retreat if it can be done safely before using deadly force. [legalclarity.org], [findlaw.com]
-
Castle Doctrine: Limited yes. New York recognizes a castle doctrine–type exception inside one’s dwelling. When lawfully inside your home and not the initial aggressor, there is no duty to retreat, but the use of deadly force must still meet strict legal criteria (e.g., imminent deadly threat, burglary, or arson). What Does It Mean to Be a Responsible Gun Owner in New York?
Responsible ownership in New York includes:
-
Knowing and complying with state and local laws (licensing, transport, and sensitive locations). [viscosilaw.com], [legalclarity.org]
-
Safe storage to prevent unauthorized access, especially by minors. [gunsafety.ny.gov]
-
Ongoing training and education to maintain proficiency and legal awareness. [uniteddefe...ctical.com]
-
Proper maintenance to ensure safe and reliable operation.
-
Understanding limitations on use of force under Article 35. [ypdcrime.com]
Does New York Have Reciprocity With Other States?
-
New York honors no out‑of‑state permits. Bringing a handgun into New York without a NY license is a felony (with limited federal transit exceptions). [safercarry.com]
-
Some states honor a New York pistol license, but reciprocity varies and can change. Travelers must check the destination state’s laws before carrying. [my.conceal...lition.com], [owlbadges.com]
-
Reciprocity does not override local restrictions or “sensitive location” bans.

Training & Practice Are Essential
Marksmanship and safe firearm handling are perishable skills. If they are not practiced regularly, they diminish over time.
Consistent, intentional training is essential to maintaining proficiency, confidence, and safe habits.
When access to the range is limited, dry‑fire training at home can be an effective way to reinforce fundamentals.
Proper dry‑fire practice helps build muscle memory, improve trigger control, and reinforce safe handling habits—provided it is done safely, intentionally, and with strict adherence to firearm safety rules.
When you do get to the range, it’s important to train with purpose. Ammunition is expensive, and unstructured shooting can quickly waste time and resources. Having a structured training plan allows you to focus on specific skills, track progress, and maximize each round fired.
Effective training also includes:
-
Researching and using appropriate shooting drills aligned with your goals
-
Focusing on fundamentals before increasing speed or complexity
-
Maintaining your firearm clean, inspected, and properly functioning
-
Understanding that training is about improvement—not just repetition
Responsible training combines preparation, discipline, and ongoing education.
Because proficiency is earned through consistency—and consistency requires planning.
